MechLog CEO, Jillian Aylett Brown honoured with the award for the Outstanding Female Contributor to the Tasmanian Timber Industry at the prestigious Tasmanian Timber Awards

Mechanised Logging (MechLog) CEO, Jillian Aylett Brown, has been named as the Outstanding Female Contributor to the Tasmanian Timber Industry at the prestigious Tasmanian Timber Awards. Ms Aylett Brown was presented with her award at the Tasmanian Forests and Forest Product Network’s, Gala Awards Dinner, held on Friday September 10 in Launceston.

Ms Aylett Brown, said that she was honoured to win such a prestigious award, particularly because the other contenders were of such a high calibre and that they too had made a significant contribution to Tasmania’s flourishing timber industry.

“It is important to recognise excellence in any industry, but particularly the forestry industry, which is often seen as a male domain. Over the past decade, the Tasmanian forestry sector has attracted a significant number of highly qualified women to every aspect of the industry, be it agriculture, laboratory work, logistics, or senior management. Today, female participation in the forestry sector has grown to around 20 per cent; and I am convinced that awards, such as the Tasmanian Timber Awards, serve to increase the number women who view forestry as an exciting and viable career path,” Jillian said.

“I have committed my whole career in the forestry industry to helping to build MechLog into an organisation that views sustainable management of our natural resource forests and plantations as a vital part of the success of our company and the industry. Sustainable management and harvesting of plantation timbers – literally the most renewable of resources – will relieve the pressure on harvesting old-growth forests, while continuing to grow Tasmania’s regional economies. At MechLog, we believe that training, Work, Health & Safety, and innovative, environmentally responsible harvesting practices form the foundation of sustainable management.

“Over the next decade, through MechLog, my personal goal is to work with our industry partners and governments to show the world that timber as a renewable resource is as important in wood production to build homes, manufacture, furniture, and to support Australia’s exports, as it is for its ecological and environmental benefits. To achieve this, the industry needs to attract motivated, highly qualified, and well-trained women and men who care as much for the industry in which they work as they do for the environment. The Tasmanian Timber Awards recognise and celebrate this attitude. Recognising women who succeed in the forestry industry will also serve to encourage and attract more female participation in the sector,” Jillian said.

Now in their second year, the Tasmania Forests and Forest Practices Network Tasmanian Timber Awards recognises excellence and best practice within the Tasmanian forestry industry. Each of the 14 categories recognise individuals and companies for their dedication to best practice, excellence and leadership in their particular roles or business activities. The awards were not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
